PRESIDENT MUHAMADU BUHARI CHARGED 2019 NATIONAL PRODUCTIVITY ORDER OF MERIT (NPOM) AWARDEES TO SERVE AS PRODUCTIVITY AMBASSADORS
President Muhamadu Buhari, on the 30th of January 2020, hosted the 2019 National Productivity Order of Merit (NPOM)Awardees at the Conference Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja. In his address, while congratulating them on their awards the president drew inspiration from Paul Krugman’s famous productivity quote “…in the end productivity is almost everything” to underscore the role productivity plays in national development and wellbeing. He then charged the Awardees, amongst whom were, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Dr. Oba otudeko, Mr. Tony Elumelu, etc., to serve as productivity ambassadors for the nation.
The National Productivity Order of Merit Award programme was conceptualized to recognise and celebrate excellence in addition to establishing a culture of performance and healthy competition amongst workers and firms, thus, leading to increased productivity and industrial harmony. The underlying philosophy is that entrenching a performance culture as well as healthy competition amongst workers and firms will stimulate creativity and innovation across economic sectors, which will culminate in increased national productivity. The specific objectives of the initiative include:
- To identify and reward the most productive workers and organizations in both the public and private sectors of the economy.
- To develop productivity culture and quality service delivery among workers and organizations in both Public and Private Sectors in Nigeria.
Like every other year, the National Productivity Order of Merit Award 2019, was conferred on individuals and organizations that have performed excellently against the rubrics set for the award. The rubric is a robust framework that is a globally benchmarked developmental tool – that can help organizations to align their strategies and goals to their objectives as well as enhance their management systems and processes to drive productivity and growth. Apart from the foregoing, the rubric also enables organizations to validate their performance and gain recognition locally and internationally. To date, 333 individuals and 81 corporate bodies have been conferred with the NPOM Award.
